PETALING JAYA: Students and families needing Internet data or devices will be eligible for special telco plans under the newly-announced Keluarga Malaysia package.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa announced in a statement today (Sept 15) that he has met with telecommunication companies to introduce short-term packages that will enable more Malaysians, especially those from the low-income group, to purchase affordable devices and Internet access.

Under the Keluarga Malaysia Youth Package, those aged below 21 and postgraduate students will be eligible for a prepaid plan offering 20GB Internet for three months priced at RM10 monthly. Annuar in his statement said the 20GB allocation can be used for leisure activities such as downloading videos or online gaming.

In addition, students will also receive 1GB daily (90GB total) free for activities that include online classes and working from home.

He said students or youths under 21 years old only need to register with their MyKad while postgraduate students need to register with their student ID.

For the Keluarga Malaysia Device Package, Malaysians will be able to afford or upgrade to a mobile device with VoLTE (Voice over LTE, or voice calls over 4G network) for free. They are required to subscribe to a contract for between 12 to 24 months from RM40 per month, depending on the type of device and service they choose.

Eligible users can sign up for two packages under the same ID.

In an interview with the media at the launch event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek said the packages will be available through all telcos.

He added that users can opt for various device models and plans with an unlimited or fixed amount of monthly data, depending on the package provided by telcos.

The registration period for both the Keluarga Malaysia youth and device packages starts Oct 15 and will continue for six months until April 15, 2022. More details are expected to be announced later.
