Badminton: Coach Flandi not surprised by duo’s winning mentality

PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani’s breakthrough win on the German Open did not come as a shock to teach Flandi Limpele.

Flandi attributed the win to their arduous work and a change in mindset.

On Sunday, world No. 17 Sze Fei-Izzuddin put up a valiant present to beat Liu Yuchen-Ou Xuanyi of China 23-21, 16-21, 21-14 in a 80-minute pulsating last in Mulheim.

It’s their largest profession win since reaching the ultimate of the Malaysian Masters in 2017.

“One of the significant changes is that, they now play with their heart,” stated Flandi, who took cost of the lads’s doubles division in 2020.

“They are more motivated and showed better fighting spirit. We have been working on changing their mindset and mental preparation.

“We’ve also strengthened their game and skills and reduced their weak points.”

Although gifted, Sze Fei-Izzuddin had struggled to go far for a while.

Last 12 months, below Flandi, nationwide No. 1 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik did the nation proud by winning their first bronze medal on the Tokyo Olympic Games.

“I feel blessed that our men’s doubles department have good doubles players. We’ve a few more youngsters waiting for opportunities to prove themselves too,” added Flandi.
