An Among Us crewmate-shaped chicken nugget from McDonalds is currently going for US$39,877 (RM164,532) on eBay. The item, listed by seller polizna, has received more than 145 bids since it was first offered on May 28 with a starting price of US$0.99 (RM4).

According to the item description, the nugget came from a BTS Meal combo. It was also described as “used”.

The listing also states that the item will be frozen and airsealed before being shipped off to the successful bidder who will also receive some sauces. The auction is expected to end on Friday (June 4).

The auction gained the attention of the social media team behind the verified Among Us account with a tweet on June 2 saying they are unsure how to feel about it. In a later tweet to McDonalds, the Among Us team asked to “split the cost”.

In an interview with CNET, polizna said they had only expected to fetch around US$50 (RM205) for the nugget, adding that the final bidder may not commit to the purchase.

“I had figured it would get somewhere around US$50 (RM206) but nothing like this, at the end of the day there are some people out there who *would* pay some absurd price for a McDonald’s chicken nugget, but I don’t think the final bidder will actually go through with the purchase as there are lots of people who bid on things like this for the ‘memes’,” polizna, who is identified only as Tav, told CNET.

Among Us is a multiplayer game where players are assigned roles as crewmates on a ship while one of them will be secretly given the role of an assasin or imposter. The objective of the game is to correctly identify the imposter before he or she kills everyone else. The game is available on multiple platforms including mobile, PC and console.

Tav also told CNET that the Among Us nugget bid was inspired by an eBay auction in 2017 where a seller placed a Harambe gorilla-shaped Cheetos for sale. The item fetched US$99,900 (RM412,337) with 132 bids.

According to a BBC report, Harambe is a gorrila that became a meme in 2016 after it was shot by a zoo worker in the US to protect a child who fell into an enclosure. A video of the incident was uploaded on to YouTube and prompted an outcry against the use of lethal force.
