ALOR SETAR: Variants of concern (VOC) such as Delta are spreading in all communities throughout Kedah, says state Health director Dr Othman Warijo.

He said the Covid-19 coronavirus virus was no longer confined to particular clusters or areas, adding that it was broadly infectious across the state’s population.

“We find cases in town and rural areas, in the workplace, public places, residential areas and villages,” he said.

He said 60% of new cases now came from close contact screening.

The rest came from asymptomatic screening and self-screening.

Dr Othman observed that the increase in infections in Penang and Perak of late could partly be due to Kedahans who commute to work there.

Kedah is among the states logging four-digit case numbers in recent weeks.

In Perlis, state health committee chairman Teh Chai Aan said although more than 50% of the people in Perlis were vaccinated, there were those who still flouted the SOP.

However, he also noted that patients in Perlis were mostly in Category One or Two.

Early this month, Perlis was among the few states that was allowed to move into Phase Three of the National Recovery Plan.

Since last week, however, the state has begun recording double-digit case numbers, with a high of 98 on Saturday.

Penang health committee chairman Dr Norlela Ariffin said the spike in cases was caused by industrial and workplace clusters.

She said the state government had made moves to add more quarantine centres such as in Caring Society Complex, while more patients with mild symptoms were asked to self-quarantine at home.
