Covid-19: 608 new cases, two deaths in Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak reported 608 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday (May 20), with triple-digit figures reported in the Sibu and Miri districts.

In a statement, the state disaster management committee said Sibu had the most new cases with 120, followed by Miri with 110.

Together with Kuching (86), Kapit (76) and Bintulu (50), these five districts accounted for 72.7% of the total new cases.

With 22 other districts reporting between one and 32 cases each, the state’s cumulative tally has risen to 40,259.

The committee also said there were two new fatalities due to Covid-19, taking the death toll to 239.

The latest fatalities were an 84-year-old woman who died at Miri Hospital on May 18 and a 90-year-old man who died at the Sarawak General Hospital here on May 19.

In addition, the committee said two new community clusters had emerged at Jalan Kenyalang Park here and at a village in Serian.

It said the Kenyalang Park cluster involved four families with 27 confirmed cases from the screening of 65 individuals.

In Serian, the Tebakang cluster was detected at Kampung Tebakang Melayu with 19 confirmed cases out of 78 individuals screened to date.

“Contact tracing for screening is still being carried out for this cluster,” the committee said.
