PETALING JAYA: The Covid-19 death toll continued to rise on Sunday (July 11), with 91 fatalities recorded involving 86 Malaysians and five foreigners, says the Health Ministry.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also said new daily Covid-19 cases continued to outpace recoveries as Malaysia recorded 9,105 infections and 5,194 recoveries.

To date, Covid-19 has claimed 6,158 lives in Malaysia since the pandemic began and the country’s death rate is at 0.74%.

Of the latest deaths, 34 were in Selangor, 21 in Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan (12), Melaka (eight), Johor (six), Pahang (three), Kelantan (two) and one each in Sarawak, Penang, Perak, Kedah and Labuan.

“The youngest casualty reported on Sunday was a 24-year-old man at Selayang Hospital, who had tuberculosis and chronic lung disease,” Dr Noor Hisham said.

Brought-in-dead cases were recorded at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar, Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang (Selangor), Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah in Kuala Pilah (Negri Sembilan), Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz in Cheras (Kuala Lumpur), Hospital Tengku Anis in Pasir Puteh (Kelantan), University Malaya Medical Centre in Selangor and Hospital Pulau Pinang in Penang.

Out of the 9,105 new cases, Selangor continued to top the list with 4,682 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,247), Negri Sembilan (541), Johor (392), Kedah (382) and Pahang (300).

Melaka recorded 278 cases, while Sabah had 271, Sarawak (270), Penang (243), Perak (207), Kelantan (150), Labuan (54), Putrajaya (49), Terengganu (38) and one in Perlis.

Dr Noor Hisham added that the Covid-19 infectivity rate or R-naught (R0/Rt) value is at 1.13.

The R0/Rt data projects the average number of people that each new Covid-19 patient will infect.

Rt means the effective reproduction number. An Rt of less than 1.0 means the infection is not spreading.

Except for Perlis, Kelantan, Labuan and Sarawak, he said the rest of the states have an Rt of at least 1.0.

“Putrajaya’s Rt is at 1.20, followed by Kuala Lumpur at 1.18.

“Selangor and Melaka’s Rt stands at 1.17, Kedah (1.14), Perak (1.11), Pahang (1.09), Sabah and Terengganu (1.08), Negri Sembilan (1.02), and Johor and Penang (1.0),” he said.

At present, 961 patients are being treated at intensive care units, with 455 on ventilator support.

The current total of active Covid-19 cases has risen to 87,841.

The ministry also identified 19 new Covid-19 clusters nationwide, of which 13 are outbreaks at the workplace, five in the community while one involved a high-risk group in Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur.

Three workplace clusters were each reported in Selangor and Johor, two each in Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan, and one each in Penang and Sabah.
