PUTRAJAYA: The fourth phase of the national Covid-19 immunisation programme beginning on Wednesday (June 16) will target industry workers, says Khairy Jamaluddin.

The programme’s coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin said it is meant to reduce the number of infections in workplaces as workplace outbreaks continue to dominate the number of new clusters every day.

“If we look at the daily Covid-19 data, yesterday (June 13), 11 out of 15 clusters are workplace outbreaks, involving almost 200 active cases,” said Khairy.

“This is why we made the decision for the fourth phase, or the pandemic control phase, to kick off as soon as possible to reduce the number of workplace clusters and stop the transmission of infections among workers,” he added.

Khairy said that the pandemic control phase will involve critical economic sectors, which he added are the backbone of economic development.

“This is important to achieve the balance between lives and livelihoods,” said Khairy, at the weekly Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) press conference here.

For the month of June, Khairy said 30,000 vaccination doses will be set aside to give jabs to factory workers.

“We will start with the manufacturing sector that is operating during the lockdown.

The International Trade and Industry Ministry will be tasked to open PPVs (vaccination centres) for these sectors,” said Khairy.

“After the manufacturing sector, PPVs for other sectors in the industry, including construction, plantation, retail and hospitality will also be opened,” he added.

Khairy said that these vaccinations will be done in phases to ensure that sectors that remain open during the lockdown will be given protection through the programme
