KOTA KINABALU: The state capital emerged as the district with the highest number of new infections on Monday (June 21), registering 44 cases from the total of 166 cases in Sabah.

State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said this was due to continued screening activities as well as a new cluster on an offshore floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility.

“The existing Coral cluster added two new cases while the new Samedra cluster recorded 15 cases.

“Also contributing to the high figure are close contact screenings which recorded 18 cases, symptomatic screenings (six) and three other cases,” said Masidi who is state Covid-19 spokesman.

The Samedra cluster is one of the two new clusters reported today and it involves the outbreak among oil rig workers at FPSO Kikeh platform where the index case is a male supervisor aged 35.

Another cluster in Tawau dubbed Serudung Baru, originated from a birthday party at the house of the index case, a 60-year-old man with family members attending the event on June 12.

He was confirmed positive on June 16 with further screenings bringing cumulative cases to 19.
