ALOR SETAR: A new Covid-19 cluster has been detected at the Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB) after nine students tested positive for the virus.

State Health Exco Datuk Dr Mohd Hayati Othman confirmed this when contacted, adding that the students who tested positive stayed at the hostels inside the polytechnic.

Prior to this, Guang Ming Daily had reported on Monday (June 21) evening that Kulim assemblyman Yeo Keng Chuan had said in a statement that the polytechnic had closed the campus and that more than 800 students have been told to isolate and quarantine themselves in their hostels.

He also said all learning progammes had been suspended except online classes and that the students started to show symptoms of Covid-19 on June 21.

However, the source of the infection is still unknown.

“Unfortunately and unexpectedly, the students were infected,” said Yeo.

He added that a special meeting involving the Kulim District Officer and all relevant authorities and agencies will be held on Tuesday (June 22) to discuss whether to enforce an enhanced movement control order on the polytechnic.
