ALOR SETAR: A new Covid-19 cluster has been detected at a public technical institution of higher learning in Kulim, when 24 of its students tested positive on Monday (June 21).
They comprise of students who stayed at Politeknik Kulim hostels.
As of noon on Monday, the 24 boarding students have been diagnosed. However, the source of the infection is still unknown.
Kulim assemblyman Yeo Keng Chuan, in a statement as reported in Guang Ming Daily said the polytechnic had closed the campus and more than 800 of its students had been ordered to be isolated and quarantined at their respective hostels.
He also said all learning programmes had been suspended except online classes.
It was reported that the polytechnic started to allow students to return to the campus on May 18.
“Strict prevention procedures were carried out on the returning students such as instructing them to go through quarantine and health screening.
“Unfortunately and unexpectedly, the students were infected, ” said Yeo.
