SEREMBAN: The spike in Covid-19 cases in Negri Sembilan is due to increased testing in the state as well as a more imported cases, says its health committee chairman S. Veerapan.

He said the increase was also due to more testing of industrial workers, close contacts and symptom-based screening by health authorities.

“The increase is also caused by imported cases from neighbouring states. We have locals who travel interstate for work, who come back and infect their families,” he said in a statement Sunday (June 13).

Negri registered 618 cases on June 12, making it the state with the second highest number of cases that day.

There were 685 cases recorded on June 11, which increased from June 10 (507), June 9 (507), June 8 (505), June 7 (505), and June 6 (571).

A total 33,451 cases have been reported in Negri since the pandemic started. As of June 12, 5,373 people were still undergoing treatment and 208 others have died.

Veerapan said new cases were also being detected from clusters which were detected before the lockdown.

However, he said the infectivity rate (Rt) in the state has reduced from 1.23 on June 5 to 1.05 on June 12.

He said four government hospitals have been turned into Covid-19 treatment facilities. There are also three government Integrated Quarantine and Treatment Centres and three more run by the private sector.

Veerapan said there are five quarantine centres in the state, of which two are government training institutes and two hotels.
