KOTA BARU: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) has urged the government not to forfeit the annual leave of 180,000 frontliners who have been working almost continuously since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Its president Adnan Mat said that since the start of the movement control order (MCO) on March 18 last year, the frontliners could not take their annual leave in an effort to ensure that the community received the necessary healthcare.

“Cuepacs found that some of them had their leave frozen and as such, we urge the government to consider accumulating their unused leave during the pandemic.

“We request that the government consider not to forfeit the leave within three years but to extend the period to five years or more, until a time when they are able to make use of it,” he told reporters after visiting the State Education Department Dewan Sri Tunjong vaccination centre here on Sunday (Sept 5).

Adnan also proposed that payment be arranged in lieu of unused annual leave as implemented in Singapore.

“We also request that the leave balance be included together with the workers’ 15 rest days which had been the practice previously,” he added.

On another matter, Adnan urged the government through the Finance Ministry, in its 2022 Budget to be tabled on Oct 29, to consider a new remuneration system to improve on the existing scheme.

“It is very important for the government to provide a Budget to meet the demands of civil servants and… to ensure the minimum wage is raised to be above the poverty line,” he said. – Bernama
