Daily cases rise above 5,000 mark

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Covid-19 daily cases continued to hover around the 5,000 mark, with Selangor recording more than 2,000 new infections.

In his daily Covid-19 statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reported that Malaysia had 5,244 new cases in the 24-hour span up till noon yesterday.

This was a slight increase, after the country’s cases dipped below 5,000 in the previous two days.

Selangor recorded 2,001 new cases, of which 703 (35%) of them were unlinked sporadic infections found in the community.

About half of the state’s cases (1,092) were traced from close contacts while 200 were linked to clusters. Another six cases were imported infections.

Case figures in Negri Sembilan remained high at 677 new infections – the second highest in the country.

Since the pandemic began, 711,006 people had been infected with Covid-19.

Yesterday, 6,372 more patients were discharged from treatment, bringing the total number of recoveries to 645,553.

Malaysia also reported 83 more Covid-19 fatalities, taking the death toll to 4,637.

Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths with 35 cases.

Other states that reported Covid-19 deaths were Kuala Lumpur (nine cases), Johor (eight), Sabah (seven), Negri Sembilan (seven), Kelantan (six), Sarawak (three), Labuan (three), Perak (two), Kedah (one), Melaka (one) and Perlis (one).

Six of the fatalities involved foreign citizens.

In the latest update, the youngest casualty was a 26-year-old man who died at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang. He had a history of high blood pressure and dyslipidemia.
