Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Malaysia logged 6,806 new Covid-19 infections.

The figure overtook the previous day’s record-breaking 6,075 cases.

The 59 Covid-19 deaths recorded yesterday were also Malaysia’s highest, more than the 47 fatalities logged on Tuesday.

“The country’s Covid-19 death toll has now risen to 2,099. Of the 59 new deaths, 14 were recorded in Johor, 10 in Selangor, eight in Kuala Lumpur and six in Kelantan.

“Negri Sembilan and Melaka had four deaths each; Kedah, Perak and Terengganu had three deaths each; Sarawak had two deaths; while Sabah and Penang had one death each, ” said Dr Noor Hisham.

The youngest was a 37-year-old obese man who died at Hospital Sultan Ismail in Johor Baru.

The oldest was a 91-year-old man with a history of diabetes, hypertension and chronic lung disease who died at the Sarawak General Hospital.

A total of 17 who died were below the age of 60.

Only one person was a non-Malaysian. The 50-year-old man, who had no underlying conditions, died at Hospital Sultan Ismail in Johor Baru.

There were seven cases classified as “brought in dead” (BID).

The BID cases were reported at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (two cases), Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Cheras (two cases), Hospital Alor Gajah (one case), Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah Kuala Terengganu (one case) and Hospital Serdang (one case).

Currently, there are 587 people in intensive care, with 330 on ventilator support.

Nationwide, there are now 50,171 active cases.

Malaysia’s cumulative Covid-19 figure since the pandemic is now 492,302.

Of yesterday’s 6,806 new cases, about 33% of them were in Selangor, which reported 2,277 new infections.

Dr Noor Hisham said that more than half of Selangor’s cases (1,510) were uncovered from contact tracing.

Another 153 cases in Selangor were from clusters, while 614 were unlinked cases detected from various screening activities.

Another three states had more than 600 cases – Kuala Lumpur with 655, Johor with 615 and Sarawak with 608.

Putrajaya (35 new cases), Labuan (17) and Perlis (eight) were the only ones that did not report three-digit figures.

The Health Ministry also identified 24 new Covid-19 clusters – also a new daily record for new clusters.

Nine clusters are outbreaks at workplaces, seven are community clusters while six are linked to religious activities.

One new cluster is linked to an outbreak in an old folk’s home while another is related to a school.
