Education: Longer school day trial begins in Wales


A trial to increase the school day in Wales has began.

Education Minister Jeremy Miles mentioned 13 major and secondary colleges and one faculty would participate in a pilot scheme – including an additional 5 hours every week for teams of pupils.

Josh, a pupil at Abertillery Comprehensive in Blaenau Gwent, mentioned: “I believe I’ll cope fairly properly. I’d simply need to go to mattress a bit earlier.”

A complete of 1,800 youngsters can have an extended day for 10 weeks and participate in periods reminiscent of artwork, music and sport, in addition to tutorial classes.

But commerce union NAHT Cymru mentioned it had not been supplied with any proof to assist extending the school day and raised issues in regards to the potential further workload on workers.
