ROME (Reuters) – Italy’s Supreme Court confirmed the conviction of former AC Milan and Brazil striker Robinho to 9 years in jail for his involvement in a gang rape of an Albanian lady in 2013, his lawyer stated on Wednesday.
The ruling can’t be challenged and is definitive.
In 2017 a Milan court docket discovered Robinho and 5 different Brazilians responsible of assaulting the lady after plying her with alcohol in a discotheque. The conviction was confirmed by an appeals court docket in 2020.
Robinho, whose full title is Robson de Souza, lives in Brazil. His Italian lawyer Franco Moretti confirmed Wednesday’s verdict, telling Reuters it was “deeply unfair”.
Robinho, 37, performed for prime European soccer golf equipment Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan, and signed a contract in 2020 to return to his very first membership in Brazil, Santos.
However, the deal virtually instantly fell aside after sponsors reportedly threatened to chop ties with the membership for signing a participant convicted of rape.
Italy may launch extradition proceedings now that Robinho has obtained a definitive verdict. However, Brazil has a long-standing custom of not extraditing its personal residents.
