Football: Soccer-Hertha Berlin win playoff to deny Hamburg promotion to Bundesliga

HAMBURG, Germany (Reuters) – Hertha Berlin retained their top-flight standing by beating second-tier Hamburg SV 2-0 within the second leg of their Bundesliga promotion-relegation playoff on Monday to seal a 2-1 combination win with objectives by Dedryck Boyata and Marvin Plattenhardt.

Ludovit Reis’s strike within the first leg gave Hamburg a slim benefit and opened the door for a return to the highest flight however Hertha levelled 4 minutes into the second leg when skipper Boyata nodded residence Plattenhardt’s nook.

Plattenhardt then doubled the lead after the hour mark, firing residence an inswinging free-kick from a good angle that caught goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes off guard because the ball sailed over his outstretched arm and into the highest nook.

In a tense finish to the competition, Hertha performed the ultimate seconds with 10 males after midfielder Lucas Tousart was proven a second yellow card.
