Health DG: Overall ICU bed occupancy continues to drop, but Kedah and Perak operating above 100%

PUTRAJAYA: The country’s intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy by Covid-19 patients continues to drop, says Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

However, Kedah and Perak are operating above 100% of their ICU capacity as of Monday (Sept 6), he added.

In a Twitter post, he revealed that the country’s ICU usage rate was at 68%, down from 86% the previous day (Sunday, Sept 5).

Kedah’s ICU usage is down to 102% from 123% of its 104-bed capacity.

Perak, which has a capacity of 90 ICU beds, saw its usage increase from 108% to 111%.

Kelantan, which reported 103% usage of its 85 ICU beds on Sunday, saw a decrease to 95% on Monday.

Sabah (90% out 143 ICU beds), Johor (91% out of 110 beds) and Perlis (91% of 11 beds) are the other states reporting more than 90% ICU bed usage.

Selangor’s ICU usage has decreased to 75% (out of 317 beds) from 96%, while Kuala Lumpur’s figure has gone up from 54% to 73% (out of 187 beds).

Sarawak’s ICU bed occupancy (out of 120 beds) has also gone up, from 73% to 83%.

Other states and territories showing 65% ICU bed occupancy or lower are Terengganu (65% out of 39 beds), Pahang (63% out of 66 beds), Penang (51% out of 73 beds), Melaka (50% of 90 beds), Negri Sembilan (26% of 88 beds), Putrajaya (25% of 20 beds) and Labuan (0% of 18 beds).

In terms of Covid-19 non-ICU beds, the nationwide occupancy rate as of Monday was at 72% (out of 17,885 beds), a decrease from 76% the previous day.

Johor had the highest usage of non-ICU beds, operating at 111% of its 2,511-bed capacity.
