Contemporary artist and educator Jalaini Abu Hassan’s first book of poetry, Catan Sopan, will likely be launched along with an artwork exhibition of the identical title, subsequent week.
The exhibition, from Dec 5-10, will showcase the bitumen and acrylic paintings, in addition to the watercolour works, featured in the book. It will likely be held on the Old Quarters at Lightcraft’s premises on Jalan Chan Sow Lin in Kuala Lumpur, set in the previous staff’ quarters of the historic Federal Bakery.
Jalaini, or higher generally known as Jai, has seven poems, seven canvas paintings and 7 watercolours in this book.
“As a hybrid type of expression, my new physique of labor referred to as Catan Sopan (2022) combines poetry and portray utilizing Malay fables and allusions in addressing modern socio-cultural, political narratives,” says Jai concerning the publication and artwork route.

“As poetry, it capabilities in a wide range of methods – as a type of storytelling, as social realist critique and expression, and as a reflexive monologue supporting the visible agenda of the paintings. It is directed towards a delicate criticism in the way of the Malay sopan (courteous) method,” he provides.
These poems have been written in Bahasa Malaysia and have been translated into English by National Laureate Muhammad Haji Salleh.
“His canvases take us to a nest of symbols that resonate with significant proverbs and conventional pondering, whereas defining our occasions. These paintings touch upon what is occurring in his society,” writes Muhammad in his welcome be aware.

The book is a bilingual presentation.
On Dec 10 (4pm), Wacana Catan Sopan: Melihat Puisi Mendengar Catan will likely be held on the exhibition venue.
This dialogue is open to the general public. The book is on the market for buy on the exhibition for RM80.
