PETALING JAYA: The number of Covid-19 patients requiring oxygen assistance at the Malaysia Agriculture Expo Park (MAEPS) integrated quarantine and treatment centre in Serdang has seen an 80% drop from earlier this month.

Only 109 patients currently in the centre need oxygen assistance, down from 525 in early August.

Centre director Dr Shahabuddin Ibrahim said the decline was a good sign that the Covid-19 situation in Malaysia was improving, Sinar Ahad reported on Sunday (Aug 29).

“Out of 2,456 patients, 109 patients are in Category Four and 1,930 in Category Three.

“On Aug 8, we had 525 Category Four and 1,789 Category Three patients so the situation is getting better,” he said.

He added that the centre was well stocked with oxygen tanks and oxygen concentrator machines for patients in critical or serious condition, thanks to the Selangor Health Department and Health Ministry.

Since the number of people who need the machines has declined, Dr Shahabuddin said some of this equipment has been redeployed in other states such as Pahang, Johor, Penang, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu.

“I can say that the health officers here can breathe a sigh of relief.

“Those who came to help from other states such as Sabah, Sarawak and Penang have also returned.

“We expect that the declining trend will continue and the situation will get better in the next two to three weeks,” he said.

Dr Shahabuddin added that the positive development had proven the effectiveness of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.
