KYIV (Reuters) – The mayor of the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol on Monday mentioned that about 40,000 civilians had been forcibly moved to Russia or Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine.

“Unfortunately I’ve to declare that as of at this time they’re forcibly deporting” residents, Vadym Boichenko advised Ukrainian tv. “We have verified via the municipal register that they’ve already deported over 40,000 individuals.”

It was not potential for Reuters to independently affirm the allegation. Russia has denied targetting civilians in Ukraine.
