KOTA KINABALU: People may buy alcoholic beverages at supermarkets or sundry shops in Sabah, says state Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Masidi Manjun.

“A supermarket is a supermarket. You can buy anything that it sells.

“The standard operating procedures do not specify or itemise what you can or cannot buy,” he said on Friday (June 4) when asked if there were any restrictions in the state on the sale of such items.

However, he explained that liquor shops were not allowed to operate as they are a non-essential business.

“If bars are closed and dining in at restaurants is not allowed under the movement control order, the issue of sale of liquor does not arise.

“Are shops selling only liquor an essential service?” he said when asked if such businesses had to close during the MCO, after the issue of liquor sales during the lockdown arose on the peninsula.
