KOTA KINABALU: Birthday celebrants as well as beach goers were among 16 people issued with compounds amounting to RM32,000 for violating the conditional movement control order SOPs in Labuan on Saturday (May 22).

Labuan district OCPD Supt Ahmad Jawila said from the 16 people fined, two were caught hanging out at the beach while seven were fined for not maintaining physical distancing during a birthday party.

“Each of them was fined RM2,000 for the offences mentioned, ” he said in a statement.

He said there is also a case where the offender crossed districts without a permit and was issued a RM5,000 compound.

“The other violations were those who did not practise physical distancing and failed to scan the QR Code in their MySejahtera app when entering a premises, ” Supt Ahmad said.

The offenders in these cases were fined RM1,500 each.

He said when the CMCO was implemented on May 12, police were lenient and gave advice first instead of immediately issuing offenders with compounds.

Supt Ahmad said they chose to take a stricter approach when many were seen getting more relaxed and did not adhere to SOPs.

“We have teams going around patrolling and checking on SOP adherence continuously or on a daily basis, ” he said.
