PETALING JAYA: The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement to allow for more economic activities to reopen.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pic), expressed his thanks to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for expediting the reopening of 11 economic activities under Phase One of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

“The ministry has felt the impact on industry players of the retail and distribution sector, when businesses and premises had to close for three months since May 2021.

“The ministry fully supports the government’s decision to expedite the reopening of more economic sectors, based on the adult vaccination rate of 72.1% for the first dose and 44.5% for the second dose and because the average number of daily patients at the emergency wards have drastically reduced from 909 people to 239 people on Aug 13.

“Even so, the ministry is ensuring that all the government’s instructions will be adhered to, for example allowing only fully vaccinated individuals to enter the premises through the use of the MySejahtera digital certificate,” he said in a press statement on Sunday (Aug 15).

He added that the ministry has contacted nearly all the relevant industry players through their associations and that the ministry will offer advice to enable them to reopen on Monday (Aug 16).

“The ministry has received positive feedback from industry players, where associations will issue their respective statements welcoming this new allowance.

“The reopening of new sectors must be taken as a responsibility and not as a freedom to be abused. The ministry is confident that with the mature and responsible attitude of all parties, the Covid-19 pandemic will improve.

“The ministry will instruct all enforcement officials to carry out monitoring and inspection activities every day,” he added.

He said that a total of 32,887 people have received their vaccinations through the industrial vaccination programme targeted for the retail sector.
