IPOH: There is no need for any panic buying of essential items as there is enough supply in the market, says the Perak Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

Its state director Saifullizan Kamarul Zaman (pic) said supply of goods from wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers was adequate during the 14-day enhanced movement control order period and easily available in the market.

“In view of panic buying that started at retail premises … markets, supermarkets and other retail outlets are operating according to the hours set by the government.

“So consumers should not resort to making panic purchases. Just buy items based on actual need,” he said.

On Thursday (May 20), Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said an EMCO had been imposed on 15 localities in Besut, Terengganu, and four districts in Perak due to a sudden surge of Covid-19 cases.

The areas in Perak are Hulu Perak district (Mukim Pengkalan Hulu), Larut, Matang dan Selama districts (Mukim Taiping), Kinta district (Mukim Hulu Kinta covering Ipoh, Lahat, Chemor and Tanjong Rambutan) and Muallim district (Mukim Hulu Bernam Timur).

Saifullizan urged traders to exercise self-control by determining the appropriate quantity and sale limits for individuals or families in ensuring the supply of basic consumer goods were sufficient at all times.

“Officers will also conduct daily monitoring and inspections at retail premises to ensure adequate supply of daily necessities and traders comply with the prescribed regulations.

“Traders should not take advantage of the situation by raising the price of goods, displaying misleading prices and hoarding controlled items,” he added.
