No RM1,500 minimum wage for maids, says Saravanan

PETALING JAYA: The RM1,500 minimum wage charge is not going to be relevant to home staff, says Human Resources Minister M. Saravanan.

“However, domestic workers from Indonesia will be paid not less than the rate of the minimum wage that is being used in this country as per the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the employment and protection of Indonesian domestic servants (PDI) inked on April 1, 2022,” he stated in a press release on Saturday (April 30).

As the brand new minimum wage charge comes into impact on Sunday (May 1), Saravanan stated the implementation is not going to be delayed for any sectors or jobs as the federal government has assisted employers with Covid-19 assist packages such because the wage subsidy programme, which has allowed them to retain their employees.

“This is to ensure that employers are able to benefit from the increase in the minimum wage,” he stated.

He added that the enforcement can be carried out by the Labour Department in Peninsular Malaysia in addition to Sabah and Sarawak.

“On that note, all employers are urged to comply with the implementation of the new rate,” he stated.

Saravanan stated the brand new charge was affordable and would be sure that the welfare of low-income teams was taken care of, including that employers too would profit from the rise in buying energy.

Employers with 5 or extra employees members are required to implement the minimum wage below the foundations of the Malaysia Standard Classification of Occupations (Masco) revealed by the Human Resources Ministry.

The new charge, nevertheless, is not going to apply to employers with lower than 5 workers and so they can proceed with the earlier minimum wage charge of RM1,200 till year-end.

They will solely be required to stick to the brand new charge from Jan 1. The new minimum wage charge was gazetted within the Federal Gazette on April 27.

Saravanan stated beforehand that the wages of home staff from Indonesia would begin at RM1,200.
