Paris attacks trial to be paused after main suspect catches COVID -source

PARIS (Reuters) – The trial of Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect within the November 2015 Islamist assault that killed 130 folks in Paris, and others will be paused briefly in January as Abdeslam has caught the coronavirus, a judicial supply instructed Reuters on Friday.

The prison trial will resume as scheduled on Jan. 4 however then be formally suspended till Jan. 13., the supply mentioned.

French information company AFP earlier reported on the deliberate suspension, citing an e-mail despatched to the events by the courtroom’s president.

Abdeslam, 31, is believed by prosecutors to be the one surviving member of the Islamic State cell that carried out the gun-and-bomb attacks on bars, eating places, the Bataclan live performance corridor and the Stade de France stadium on Nov. 13, 2015.

The trial, which started in September in a specifically designed courtroom at Paris’s historic Palace of Justice, is without doubt one of the most advanced – and most carefully adopted – in trendy French historical past.

No verdict is predicted till May 2022.
