GEORGE TOWN: Penang assemblymen including the state legislative backbenchers will forgo 30% of their June salary in efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, says state Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang (pic).

Law, who will also forgo a month’s salary, said the assemblymen will contribute 30% of their June salary.

This is their 2nd contribution after a 30% salary contribution made in 2020.

“We hope this contribution will be used for the people who have to deal with the repercussions of the total lockdown after the three movement control orders,” he said in a statement on Thursday (June 3).

The money will be channelled to the Covid-19 Penang Fund.

On Wednesday (June 2), Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state executive council members will be foregoing their salary for this month.

“The salary contributions would be channelled for the use of public health and to develop the state’s overall economy. This decision is a mark of solidarity in our efforts to fight the pandemic in Penang,” Chow said.
