GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) pig slaughterhouse in Jalan Sungai has been closed after a worker there contracted Covid-19.

The council said in a statement on Friday (May 28) that the closure is to prevent further spread of the virus and thorough sanitisation and disinfection will be carried out on the premises.

MBPP said there were 32 workers at the slaughterhouse and four of them were found to have been in close contact with the infected employee.

A total of 10 workers who lived at Taman Sri Pinang near the slaughterhouse are being screened for Covid-19 by the Health Ministry, the statement added.

They have been told to observe self-quarantine until further instructions.

All scheduled operations at the premises will be carried out at the council’s pig slaughterhouse in Batu Maung for the time being.
