KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Bhd will soon make an announcement to commuters regarding changes in the Kelana Jaya Line train schedule says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said the authorities were currently conducting repairs and it was too early to announce any changes in the train schedule.

However, he assured those who relied on the LRT to commute to work that Prasarana would provide buses as was previously done when trains broke down.

“An alternative is given to commuters during emergencies. Usually when trains break down, there will be buses,” he said.

He added that since the Kelana Jaya Line had large coverage, he could not say for certain which part would be affected.

“Prasarana make an official announcement soon,” he said to during a press conference after visiting the accident site at a nearby shopping mall.

Meanwhile, Dr Wee said the Transport Ministry had set up a task force comprising its agencies to investigate the accident.

He said a preliminary report would be submitted to him in two weeks’ time.

“We will ascertain whether it was due to a system error, communications error or human error,” he said.

He also described the LRT accident as serious as one of the trains was travelling at a speed of 20kmh and the other at 40kmh.

“So when they collided, the momentum became 60 kmph. The impact is huge, that is why there were many injuries.”

Dr Wee also assured victims that the government prioritises their safety and he hoped for a speedy recovery for the 47 who suffered serious injuries.

Dr Wee also said it was the first time such a collision happened in the 23-years that LRT operated.

“We also hope authorities will learn from this incident and ensure that safety is an important factor.

A total of 47 commuters suffered serious injuries while 166 others had minor injuries in a collision at the Ampang Park LRT station involving two trains.

It is understood that the accident involved trains number 40 and 81.

One of the trains was empty but the other was carrying passengers.
