PUTRAJAYA: The programme to plant mangrove trees and different appropriate species along the nation’s coastlines, which will increase mangrove forest safety whereas selling conservation actions and elevating public consciousness, can be continued, says Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
In a message at the side of World Wetlands Day, which is well known yearly on Feb 2, the Energy and Natural Resources Minister stated the ministry can be putting in coastal blocks and eco-friendly raft piles to cut back coastal erosion on the Tanjung Piai Ramsar Site in Johor.
The ministry may even assist analysis and wetlands growth efforts by way of the availability of funds beneath the National Conservation Trust Fund for Natural Resources (NCTF) through which the main target of funding is to handle, monitor and defend areas of biodiversity curiosity and environmentally delicate areas.
Takiyuddin stated the ministry welcomed any nomination of areas with the potential to be nominated as essential biodiversity websites of worldwide curiosity by state governments similar to Kuala Gula-Matang in Perak and Teluk Air Tawar-Kuala Muda in Penang.
“The ministry may even proceed to assist all efforts in direction of defending and conserving wetlands to guarantee sustainability of the nation’s biodiversity,” Takiyuddin stated in a press release Wednesday (Feb 2).
World Wetlands Day is well known to elevate consciousness of the significance of defending and conserving wetlands and to commemorate the date of the institution of the Ramsar Convention (Feb 2, 1975). Malaysia joined the conference on March 10, 1995.
Wetlands embrace peatlands, mangrove swamps, rivers, lakes and coastal areas which are habitats for quite a lot of species of wildlife, particularly migratory birds.
Takiyuddin stated there have been seven areas declared as Ramsar Sites in Malaysia – Tasek Bera, Pahang; Tanjung Piai, Pulau Kukup and Sungai Pulai in Johor; Kuching Wetlands National Park, Sarawak; and Lower Kinabatangan-Segama Wetlands and Kota Kinabalu Wetlands, Sabah.
“These websites are protected by way of gazetting by the state governments, whether or not beneath the legal guidelines for forestry, state parks, everlasting forest reserves or wetland protected areas,” he added. – Bernama
