IPOH: Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) is objecting to a proposed logging and tin mining project on the Kenderong forest reserve in Hulu Perak.

Its president Meenakshi Raman stated the 245ha plot proposed for the project was in a pristine pure forest.

According to the quilt web page of the setting influence evaluation (EIA), the mining leaseholder was the Mentri Besar Incorporated (MBInc), she stated.

“Clear chopping, supposedly discreet clear felling as talked about within the EIA, would imply 245ha of the forest land would find yourself disastrous.

“Coupled with mining operations that can end in contamination of water assets, it will likely be catastrophic,” she stated in an announcement on Friday (Feb 4).

Meenakshi added that the proposed web site was an environmentally delicate space beneath Rank One, whereby no improvement, agriculture or logging must be permitted, aside from low influence nature tourism actions, analysis and training functions.

She stated along with this, the proposed web site was positioned throughout the main linkage of the Central Forest Spice (CFS) area the place it was reported that the realm homes endangered and practically extinct species of wildlife like elephants, tigers, tapirs and solar bears.

“The main linkage is a vital pure hall which permits giant mammals to journey from one main forest to a different to seek out meals and shelter.

“Proposing mining initiatives at such naturally pristine places will additional exacerbate the already worsened human wildlife battle scenario in Malaysia,” she added.

Meenakshi stated based on the EIA, the proposed web site was hilly terrain that had an elevation between 320 and 450m.

Moreover, she stated that the proposed web site was additionally a water catchment space, whereby the EIA report clearly states that there have been tributary rivers that ran in shut proximity of the project facet that flows into Sungai Perak.

She stated Sungai Perak was an essential water supply that offered 45% of potable water for the state, and jeopardising the water supply of the local people for mere fiscal advantages is irresponsible.

“A calamitous precedent has already been set in 2019 that proved conducting mining actions at such delicate areas spells catastrophe when traces of arsenic was discovered within the Air Ganda water consumption level brought on by a licensed mining firm on the similar proposed web site.

“No matter what kind of mitigation and reparation plans the project proponent may need really helpful, finishing up environmentally disastrous initiatives will degrade the setting.

“Thus SAM strongly opposes such proposed initiatives, and wish to reiterate our agency stand towards any type of environmentally unsound project proposal that imperils the setting, jeopardises water sources and threatens the livelihood of communities,” she added.

SAM urged the Environment Department to reject the EIA report, and the state authorities to take rapid motion to revoke the degazettement of the Kenderong forest reserve, and gazette it as a water catchment forest.

Efforts are being made to get a response from MBInc, the Mentri Besar in addition to the Environment Department.
