Restructure online learning format to reduce stress, eye problems among students, urges university student group

KOTA KINABALU: The structure and format of online learning have to be reviewed, seeing that this might be the norm for students in years to come, says a university student group in Sabah.

Mohd Izzat Dahelan, president of the Suara Mahasiswa Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), said that although online classes are inevitable and the best way to conduct during this pandemic, there is a need for it to be restructured.

He said online learning had caused problems such as increased stress among students due to more homework given and extended screen time – which results in eye-related health issues and mental pressure.

“These are just some problems faced by higher learning institute students, and I am sure there are more, ” he said in a statement here.

Izzat said lecturers, and teachers in general, should come up with creative ways to conduct online classes that are efficient and acceptable to all.

He also suggested for educators to undergo training on ways to conduct efficient and time effective online classes.

He said an online survey can be conducted to identify the pros and cons of online learning and ways to improve.

“Dialogue sessions can also be conducted virtually with students, parents and educators so that idea sharing can be done for the betterment of online studies, ” Izzat said.

He said these suggestions were made after complaints from fellow coursemates in UMS, as well as other institutions.

He explained that this is not to criticise anyone but to create an awareness that online learning can be improved while the ideas and suggestions from various parties should be considered for the good of all.
