KUCHING: A youth who impersonated a doctor at the Indoor Stadium vaccination centre here did not administer any Covid-19 vaccines, an internal investigation has found.

State health director Datuk Dr Mohamed Sapian Mohamed said the Health Department’s probe also found that the imposter was never assigned any duties or listed in the duty roster at the vaccination centre.

“The individual who used the name Dr Shah went to the vaccination centre several times from June 16.

“He claimed to be a houseman at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and only came to help if needed, but he did not officially report for duty.

“No duties were assigned to him and he was usually seen at the registration area,” he said in a statement on Friday (July 9).

On Tuesday (July 6), Shah Hairil Izman Dave pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court here to impersonating a doctor at the vaccination centre and SGH.

The 20-year-old was arrested at the vaccination centre on July 1 after a medical officer reported him to the SGH management and police.

Dr Mohamed Sapian said all vaccinators on duty were verified to have their annual practising certificate before being allowed to administer jabs.

He said each station head at the vaccination centre ensured that all personnel signed in and out when they were on duty.

Investigations also found that the name and staff pass used by the impersonator were fake.

“He has never worked as a vaccinator or volunteer at SGH,” Dr Mohamed Sapian said.

To prevent a repeat of the incident, he said the management of the vaccination centre and SGH had been directed to take immediate steps.

These include issuing staff passes with registered serial numbers to all personnel on duty at the vaccination centre and submitting their names to the superintending police officer.

All medical practitioners on duty must also be able to produce their annual practising certificates at any time, while security at SGH entry points have been tightened.
