Selangor passes Bill to lower eligible age for election candidates

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor State Assembly has handed the Selangor State Constitution (Amendment) Enactment 2021 to lower the minimal age of election candidates from 21 to 18 years previous.

The modification to Article 63 of the Selangor State Constitution 1959 was accredited unanimously by all assemblymen on Monday (Dec 6).

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, when tabling the Bill, mentioned the modification was in accordance with the amended Article 47 of the Federal Constitution, which had diminished the qualifying age for the election to the Dewan Rakyat from 21 to 18.

Meanwhile, Selangor Speaker Ng Suee Lim advised reporters later that every one assemblymen had agreed to approve the enactment regardless of having numerous views on the matter.

“This is a brand new chapter for the Selangor State Assembly as a result of it efficiently handed the invoice through the third studying in the present day,” he mentioned. – Bernama
