KUALA LUMPUR: Seven men have been detained in connection with the murder of a security guard at a hotel in Jalan Bukit Ceylon here.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said the suspects, aged between 18 and 26, were detained at the hotel along Jalan Kuching and Bangsar South on Saturday (July 31) and Sunday (Aug 1).

“Initial investigations revealed that the victim was a mule account holder being used by a scam syndicate.

“The suspects detained were members of the syndicate,” he told a press conference on Monday (Aug 2).

The victim was reported missing by his wife on July 29, he added.

“An array of items was seized from the suspects, including RM24,901 cash, an air gun, 31 mobile phones, 35 SIM cards and 34 bank cards.

“The suspects have been remanded until Friday (Aug 6),” he said.

Comm Azmi said police also managed to rescue four men and a woman, all locals, who were confined by the syndicate at an apartment in Jalan Kuching.

“We will investigate further, including how long the syndicate has been operating and the nature of their scams,” he added.

It was reported that a security guard was found dead at a hotel along Lorong Ceylon here.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Zainal Abdullah had said they were alerted to the matter at 4.15am on Saturday (July 31).

“We received a call about the incident and dispatched personnel to the scene.

“Investigations revealed the body was that of a 28-year-old man,” he had said in a statement on Saturday.

Based on initial investigations, police believed the man was murdered, as bruises were found on his wrists and forehead.

“Further investigations revealed the unit (where the body was found) was rented in the name of one of the victim’s friends.

“We have arrested a 20-year-old suspect who we believe can assist with further investigations,” he said on Saturday, adding that the motive for the murder had yet to be established.
