NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared a state of emergency in his position because the performing president, after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives on Wednesday, resulting in extra protests amid an financial disaster.

“The prime minister as performing president has declared a state of emergency (countrywide) and imposed a curfew within the western province,” Wickremesinghe’s media secretary, Dinouk Colombage, advised Reuters. The curfew comes into impact instantly.
