TUNIS (Reuters) – A Tunisian man died in hospital on Wednesday from accidents inflicted by police, activists stated, in what can be the first death from protests in opposition to President Kais Saied’s assumption of further powers.
Local radio station Mosaique FM stated the general public prosecutor was investigating the death after police deployed water cannons and batons in opposition to protesters on Friday.
But there was no fast remark from authorities.
Saied is going through rising discontent over his suspension of parliament final July and subsequent rule by decree.
“Ridha Bouziane, who took half in the January 14 protest died in a hospital in the capital after struggling severe accidents consequently of the extreme violence by police in the demonstration,” the Citizens Against the Coup coalition stated.
Samir Dilou and Samir Ben Amor, attorneys for arrested protesters, additionally stated Bouziane died as a consequence of police violence, although no extra specifics got.
Saied has stated he’ll uphold all freedoms throughout a transitional interval to a brand new structure later this 12 months.
Friday’s protest defied a COVID-19 ban on gatherings.
