GENEVA (Reuters) – The capacity to criticise public coverage in Russia, notably its invasion of Ukraine, is narrowing, with some 12,700 folks unlawfully detained in anti-war protests, the highest U.N. human rights official Michelle Bachelet mentioned on Tuesday.
“I stay involved in regards to the use of repressive laws that impedes the train of civil and political rights and criminalising non-violent behaviour,” Bachelet advised the Human RIghts Council in Geneva, talking by video message.
She mentioned that ‘obscure and overly broad definitions’ of extremism and incitement to hatred in Russia had led to authorized interpretations that weren’t in line with its human rights obligations. “Further laws criminalising circumstances of ‘discrediting’ the armed forces continues down this regarding path,” she added.
