U.S. choose to query greater than 230 potential jurors for Ghislaine Maxwell trial

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The choose overseeing the trial in New York of British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell on expenses of sexual abuse mentioned on Monday she plans to query 231 potential jurors.

U.S. District Decide Alison Nathan will begin questioning the candidates on Tuesday. She plans to ask jurors whether or not they know any of the individuals who say they had been victims of the abuse and can testify, in addition to whether or not they have opinions about “people who find themselves rich or have luxurious life.”

Twelve jurors and 6 alternates can be chosen from the pool.

Maxwell, 59, is accused of grooming underage ladies for deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein to abuse. She has pleaded not responsible to 6 counts of intercourse trafficking and different crimes.

The trial’s opening statements are scheduled for Nov. 29.

Attorneys for Maxwell have argued that in depth media protection of her arrest and ties to Epstein have tainted the jury pool. Greater than 600 potential jurors crammed out questionnaires this month asking them what they’ve heard about Epstein and Maxwell, and about their very own experiences with sexual abuse.

The questioning this week, generally known as voir dire, is meant to additional weed out potential jurors who could also be biased.

Maxwell is a former girlfriend of Epstein, a teacher-turned-globetrotting-investor who counted Britain’s Prince Andrew and former U.S. President Donald Trump amongst his associates. Epstein died by suicide at age 66 in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 whereas awaiting his personal trial on intercourse crimes expenses.
