Wan Junaidi: 18-year-olds can vote if Sarawak state election held after Dec 31

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Eighteen-year-old Malaysian will probably be allowed to vote within the Sarawak state election whether it is held after Dec 31 this 12 months.

Minister within the Prime Minister’s Division (Parliament and Regulation), Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar stated voting for the 18-year-olds must be applied, as had been ordered by the Kuching Excessive Courtroom.

He was responding to Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (PH-Sepang) who requested for assurance from the federal government to implement Undi18 when winding up the controversy on the Advocates Ordinance (Sabah) (Modification) Invoice 2021 within the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Oct 28).

“Really, the Honourable Member’s query right now has nothing to do with the invoice…if the Sarawak state election is held earlier than Dec 31, it (Undi18) just isn’t relevant however solely after January 2022…we’ve to abide by the courtroom’s choice,” he stated.

Final Sept 3, the Kuching Excessive Courtroom ordered the Election Fee and the federal government to implement Undi 18 after Dec 31, 2021.

When tabling the Advocates Ordinance (Sabah) (Modification) Invoice 2021 for the second studying, Wan Junaidi stated it was usually geared toward strengthening the advocates’ companies in Sabah.
