Officially kicking off with a double header this weekend is the 2021 FIM MiniGP Malaysian series, with back-to-back races at Sepang Circuit Go-kart track on Saturday and Sunday for rounds 1 and 2. Building from the 2020 MAM Speedweek MiniGP racing last year, this year’s MiniGP championship is sanctioned by the FIM and three winners from each category will head to Spain to compete in the FIM MiniGP World Championship final round in Valencia on November 11.

A total of 25 Malaysian racers aged between nine and 14 will compete in two categories – 12 riders in the 110 cc SIC Oval Junior Championship and 13 in the 160 cc FIM MiniGP Malaysia series – riding Ohvale MiniGP racing bikes. The bikes are setup up identically, with the aim of identifying natural racing talent at the grassroots.

After a two week break, racing resumes on the weekend of October 23 and 24 with rounds 3 and 4 at the same venue. The calendar for the Malaysian MiniGP has been rushed as other competing nations in Europe have concluded their respective championships while the Malaysian leg was delayed due to lockdowns and the pandemic.

During the launch of the 2021 FIM MiniGP Malaysia championship, Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman said, “I am pleased to see our Malaysian riders competing again. Our efforts to develop this grassroots programme has gained international attention.”
