BUKIT MERTAJAM: Barbed wire placed around market complexes in Seberang Prai to prevent trespassing has been vandalised.

Seberang Prai City Council mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud said the barricades were found removed and damaged in three markets so far.

“The barbed wire was put up to increase security around the buildings following the rise in Covid-19 cases and reports of people bypassing designated entry points of the markets.

“This morning we found sections of barbed wire at Bukit Mertajam market, Bagan Ajam market and Tambun Indah market missing and damaged.

“We have begun an investigation under Section 3(2) of the council’s Vandalism By-Law 1993 to determine if the wires were damaged by traders or visitors to the markets.

“Those found guilty can be fined up to RM2,000 or jailed up to a year,” he said.

Rozali said barbed wire has been put up around markets in Kepala Batas, Taman Selamat, Tambun Indah, Bukit Mertajam, Jeti Lama and Taman Berjaya.
