BT and Discovery sport tie-up faces UK antitrust probe

(Reuters) -Britain’s competitors watchdog mentioned on Wednesday it had began investigating BT Group’s deal to mix its sports activities broadcasting enterprise with Warner Bros Discovery.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) mentioned it had till July 28 to make its part 1 determination on whether or not the three way partnership between the nation’s largest broadband and cell supplier and the U.S. firm will end in lesser competitors within the UK.

BT, a former British telecoms monopoly, clinched a sports activities broadcasting tie-up with Discovery final month after months of discussions with the American media firm.

The deal to merge BT’s sports activities TV unit with Discovery’s Eurosport in Britain and Ireland, allows the British firm to retain Premier League soccer for its prospects, whereas sharing the burden of high-priced broadcast rights.

Media and streaming firm Warner Bros Discovery was shaped from the $43 billion merger of Discovery Inc and property of AT&T Inc. Shares within the newly shaped firm began buying and selling in April.

BT didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark and Warner Bros weren’t accessible outdoors of standard enterprise hours.
