(Reuters) – Canada’s Ontario province declared a state of emergency on Friday, amid the continued trucker protests towards COVID mandates, Premier Doug Ford instructed reporters.

“I’ll convene Cabinet to make use of authorized authorities to urgently enact orders that may make crystal clear it’s unlawful and punishable to dam and impede the motion of items, individuals and repair alongside crucial infrastructure,” Ford stated in a press briefing.

Ford additionally pledged new authorized motion towards protesters, together with fines and potential jail time for non-compliance with the federal government’s orders.
