GEORGE TOWN: Determined to preserve Nyonya cuisine, a 23-year-old college scholar from Kedah began a cooking channel that includes movies of her grandmother and herself making ready conventional dishes.
Dressed in Nyonya garments and with her hair tied in a bun, Shi Qi and her grandmother are seen within the movies cooking with old-time kitchen utensils and creating delectable fare in a heartwarming manner.
Their efforts have attracted the eye of a whole bunch of 1000’s of followers on two social media platforms.
As Shi Qi is not good at cooking, she typically turns to grandma for assist on-camera when she encounters difficulties and this has touched the hearts of many viewers.
According to Shi Qi, she was impressed by her grandmother who advised her that Malaysian Nyonya tradition should be handed on.
“Well, I will try my best and this is the original intention of starting the channel,” she advised Guang Ming Daily.
Since April final 12 months, her channel has attracted greater than 560,000 followers on Douyin and 230,000 followers on Facebook.
