Covid-19: Number of cases rise above 6, 000 again after two-day dip

PETALING JAYA: The number of new Covid-19 infections in the country has increased again after dipping below the 6, 000 count for two days.

The number of new cases was 5, 271 on Monday (June 7) and 5, 566 on Tuesday (June 8).

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the number of infections was at 6, 239 on Wednesday (June 9), while recoveries stood at 7, 386.

This makes the cumulative number of confirmed cases and recoveries at 633, 891 and 548, 705 respectively.

There are currently 81, 575 active cases, with 905 cases in intensive care units and 453 requiring ventilator support.

The state with the highest number of new infections is Selangor with 2, 291 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (704) and Negri Sembilan (507).

In the same 24-hour span, 75 fatalities from Covid-19 have been recorded, pushing the death toll up to 3, 611.

Out of 75 fatalities, there were 23 deaths in Selangor, 18 in Johor, seven in Kelantan, five in Kuala Lumpur and Kedah each, three each in Sabah, Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Sarawak, two in Perak, and one death in Penang, Terengganu and Labuan.

The fatalities were aged between 26 and 92.

There have been 15 new clusters yesterday, 13 of which are workplace infections.

Another was a community transmission, while one was linked to a private educational institution registered under the Education Ministry.
