Duo plead guilty in Melaka child abuse case

MELAKA: A woman and her boyfriend pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here to abusing a five-year-old girl at a house on Aug 14.

The pleas of the 30-year-old woman, the child’s biological mother, and the 38-year-old man who works as a security guard, were recorded before Judge Maziah Joary Mohd Tajudin on Wednesday (Aug 25).

According to the charge sheet, the two had placed the child at risk by mistreating her and causing her injuries.

They allegedly committed the offence at a house here at 11.30am on Aug 14.

The charge was framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 which provides a jail term not exceeding 10 years, or a maximum fine of RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

The two were unrepresented.

The court granted bail of RM5,000 each and the accused are required to report to the nearest police station monthly until their sentencing on Sept 29.

On Aug 15, Melaka CID Chief Asst Comm Mohd Sukri Kaman said police rescued the child after receiving information that the victim was allegedly repeatedly assaulted and abused by the accused.

The victim was taken to the Melaka Hospital for treatment after she was rescued.
