Federal Govt to speed up flood mitigation projects in Kota Samarahan, says Senior Works Minister

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The authorities will expedite the development of flood mitigation projects and upgrading of the drainage system in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, with work set to begin in the primary quarter of 2022.

Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusuf mentioned the projects, costing RM30mil, can be applied by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA).

He mentioned the projects want to be expedited to overcome flood issues in Kota Samarahan, particularly in the Taman Uni Garden and Taman Samarindah housing areas, in addition to the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Muara Tuang space.

“All these plans will likely be applied subsequent 12 months. It is the residents’ hope that we will make sure the allocation and choice of contractors and consultants could be sped up.

“… be it allocation from the Federal Government or the state authorities, that is their hope. I’ve come right here to give our dedication to them,” he informed reporters after attending a briefing on the Kota Samarahan Flood Mitigation Plan on the Samarahan Division DID Auditorium right here on Saturday (Dec 11).

Fadillah mentioned that the DID would acquire possession of 6.8 hectares of land to be used as catchment ponds to handle water overflow that happens throughout downpours in the Taman Samarindah and SK Muara Tuang areas whereas drainage widening projects can be carried out for the Taman Uni Garden space. – Bernama
