GEORGE TOWN: About 170 years since its founding, St Xavier’s Institution (SXI) has obtained its first batch of Form One girls.
The 90 girls joined 170 boys on the college when bodily lessons started yesterday, a primary since SXI started accepting girls into its Form Six lessons in 1955.
“We received approval from the Education Ministry in April last year for them to join us this year,” mentioned SXI board of governors and parent-teacher affiliation (PTA) chairman Victor Tan.
“In fact, the girls would have joined earlier if not for the pandemic. We expect the number of students in Form One to increase to more than 300 over the next few weeks.”
SXI, which was based in 1852, is the primary Lasallian college in Asia.
But its historical past dates again to 1787 when it began off as a Malay-language college. .
Lasallian academic establishments are affiliated with the De La Salle Brothers, a Roman Catholic spiritual instructing order shaped in the 1600s and just like teams like Sisters of the Infant Jesus.
Tan mentioned enrolment figures for the varsity’s Form One lessons is double now in contrast with the numbers final 12 months.
He mentioned the approval from the ministry to make the varsity co-ed was not a problem as there have been no objections from the PTA.
“We welcome the girls to the school and hope they will do well as SXI practises equality and has never wavered from our motto of touching hearts and changing lives.”
Before this, girls in the realm have been enrolled in close by Convent Light Street, which has since been closed.
